Day 1: Enterprise Blockchain (14th March Thursday, 2019)

X Topic Abstract

The world has gotten past Peak Hype in December, and we're starting to see some changes in the Blockchain industry.
* Regulations around the world are starting to take shape
* There are fewer shoddy ICOs today, we are seeing more professional teams, and often larger raises
* Token classifications are starting to standardise
* The industry is starting to converge on a number of key use cases for the next wave of technology

A Blockchain by itself is not enough, we need standards for Identity, distributed storage, asset registries, tokenised assets, interoperable wallets, multi-blockchain explorers and dashboards, distributed exchanges, smart contracts for automated liquidity and continuous issuance, not to mention architectures for parallel consensus and crypto accounting. In this talk, Anouk lays out the state of the Blockchain ecosystem, the key components being built and some of the 'inevitable landscape' up ahead.
The Technology Framework I will be presenting is a matrix of components and aspects of functionality. It is based on research performed by Intraverse Technologies in a project that has not been made public at this stage. Apart from classifying architectural layers and types of currencies together with hierarchical v. network models, I will also attempt to articulate a timeline for filling out some of the components, insofar as that is possible, and time permitting. Effectively the Framework classifies projects according to the necessary components of a Blockchain Ecosystem.

Speaker Profile

X Topic Abstract

New DevOps models, a greater understanding and leveraging of technological cycles and new approaches to code development are driving both technology and innovation to evolve at even faster paces. As they do, “natural” convergences emerge between technology domains seemingly independent. These convergences are driven by engineering necessity rather than deliberate commercial or technical choices. For example, AI, IoT and DLT are currently undergoing such deep integration, self-strengthening ties which solve core challenges that each tech domain would otherwise keep on facing on a stand-alone basis. As they converge, technologies change the way management platform solutions operate and their general landscape. An in-depth understanding of these convergences, backed and illustrated by real-life use cases and examples, is therefore critical for any decision-maker investing in technology, as well as stakeholders and executive leaders of any organisations or ecosystems, be it in the enterprise, institutional or NFP camp.

X Topic Abstract

Blockchain will do to the financial system what the Internet did to media. And Blockchain will do to transactions what the Internet did for information.
Blockchain technology is a digital innovation that is poised to significantly alter the economy within the next few years, within a cryptographic ecosystem that has the potential to also significantly impact trusted computing activities and therefore cybersecurity concerns. Blockchain came to the world’s attention thanks to its role as the underlying technology behind Bitcoin, the most popular cryptocurrency.
Blockchain is a decentralized database (distributed ledger) that operates on a consensus basis. Every data block in the ledger is linked to the previous block by a cryptographic algorithm called a hash, with the linked blocks forming a chain – hence the name “blockchain.”
Four elements of Blockchain are: Replicated Ledger, Consensus, Cryptography, Business Logic.
The entire accounting system is developed in such a manner that falsification is impossible or at least very costly. This depends on constant controls, checks and reconciliations. This inevitably affects every day’s operations. These processes also lead to the duplication of efforts, excessive unnecessary documentation, etc. Most of them are manual, labour intensive tasks and far from being automated. To date, that seemed to be the sacrifice of revealing the truth.
Blockchain is concerned with the transfer of ownership of assets and maintaining a ledger of accurate financial information. The profession is largely concerned with the measurement and communication of financial information, and its further analysis. For accountants, using blockchain provides clarity over ownership of assets and existence of obligations, and could dramatically improve efficiency.
Companies can use enhance many of its functions with the help of blockchain. For example, transaction receipts can be maintained in a joint register ensuring easy accessibility instead on maintaining them on separate records. This technology will augment the capability of accountants by reducing the costs and providing certainty over the ownership and history of assets.
Blockchain is an auditing technology. Performing confirmations of a company’s financial status would be less necessary if some or all the transactions that underlie that status are visible on blockchains A blockchain solution, when combined with appropriate data analytics, could help with the transactional level assertions involved in an audit, and the auditor’s skills would be better spent considering higher-level questions.
For example, auditing is not just checking the detail of whom a transaction was between and the monetary amount, but also how it is recorded and classified. If a transaction credits cash, is this outflow due to cost of sales or expenses, or is it paying a creditor, or creating an asset?
These judgmental elements often require context that is not available to the general public, but instead require knowledge of the business, and with blockchain in place, the auditor will have more time to focus on these questions.
Auditors would be able to verify a large portion of the most important data behind the financial statements automatically, reducing the cost and time necessary to complete an audit.
In a mature blockchain and an artificial intelligence-driven world, investors could—in real-time—have a true and fair view of financials that are inherently trustworthy. This would eliminate the need for external audits in its current form, including all the associated audit procedures surrounding examination of records, assessing compliance with accounting principles, accuracy of accounting estimates, etc.
With new demand for assurance, blockchain could also change the nature of auditing, reducing the auditor’s role in checking and validating account transactions and instead moving them further up the value chain. Because of the ease of transfer of information, and the automated tracking of every transaction, blockchain can simplify and partially automate elements of accounting and compliance, making it easier to do business with new global customers and enabling elements of the audit process to be completed with even greater accuracy. Auditors will therefore be able to focus attention on non-automated elements of the audit.
To become truly an integral part of the financial system, blockchain must be developed, standardized and optimized. This process is likely to take many years – it has already been nine years since bitcoin began operating and there is much work still to be done. There are many blockchain applications and start-ups in this field, but there are very few that are beyond the proof of concept or pilot study stage.
With all of that said, it should be no surprise to firms that your auditors should be involved from the start of any blockchain project. These types of change initiatives are driven by innovation groups that often operate independently. As a result, risk management, audit, and compliance may get involved far too late in the game, causing delays. We have several clients that made audit the final hurdle in deploying a proof of concept for blockchain. When this results in the audit, compliance, or legal departments not having their concerns heard in advance, projects grind to a halt. Internal oversight should be a partner in this process, not a holdup.
The auditing profession must embrace and “lean in” to the opportunities and challenges from wide spread Blockchain adoption.

X Topic Abstract

Hyperledger Indy is a distributed ledger, purpose-built for decentralized identity. Developers can use the tools and libraries from Hyperledger Indy to create identity solutions that are interoperable across jurisdictions and agencies. This interoperability allows developers to create cross-industry solutions such as Fintech and Healthcare that can all work together and obey each other’s regulatory standards.
The Indy code base (Indy) is a software ecosystem for private, secure, and powerful identity. Once it is implemented, it puts people — not the organizations that traditionally centralize identity — in charge of decisions about their own privacy and disclosure. This enables all kinds of rich innovation: connection contracts, revocation, novel payment workflows, asset and document management features, creative forms of escrow, curated reputation, integrations with other cool technologies, and so on.
Indy uses open-source, distributed ledger technology. These ledgers are a form of database that is provided cooperatively by a pool of participants, instead of by a giant database with a central admin. Data lives redundantly in many places, and it accrues in transactions orchestrated by many machines. Strong, industry-standard cryptography protects it. Best practices in key management and cybersecurity pervade its design.
The result is a reliable, public source of truth under no single entity’s control, robust to system failure, resilient to hacking, and highly immune to subversion by hostile entities.Hyperledger Indy has complete open source specifications, terminology, and design patterns that allow for the development of decentralized identity solutions.

One of the major obstacles for using Blockchain in Enterprises is ensuring data privacy of information stored in Blockchain. To ensure data privacy among participating stake holders in the blockchain network, Hyperledger Fabric provides two features called “Channels” and “Side DB”. Channels are recommended in use cases where the entire information is shared with all participating organizations joined to that channel. There could be few use cases where few sensitive information must be shared with only few members with in the participating organizations. For such use cases it is recommended to use Side DB.

Pension reforms has been a focused agenda for our Defense forces, especially to speed-up and make ti more easier for our soldiers so they can have a relaxed life after active serving our nation. However with multiple parties involved hereand with multiple layers of process flow, this tends to become more complex. Blockchain can make it easier and fast by providing following advantages :

Group of organizations coming together to verify, add transactions using a shared ledger
Granular control to restrict / share data to select groups or people within the organizations
Smart contracts at each nodes, provide the business logic to validate transactions and emit events
(i.e.,) As soon as a pension claim is registered successfully, client systems subscribed to claims can analyze the claim and start processing the associated documents.
Ensuring Integrity of documents (i.e., no tampering)
Ensuring Authenticity (i.e., know who signed the document via the public key)
Ensuring Non-Repudiation (i.e., the signer can’t deny signing the document as the private key access is with the signer)
