Overview of the event

We recently wrapped up 2018 as the year of digital quality. We talked about how digital transformation is going to bring even more drastic shifts in how we do software delivery. And how your organization needs to brace up to bring agile models to work in order to release higher quality software faster through automated testing.

A key trend that will sweep over to bring economies of scale, speed and intelligence will be automated testing followed by AI. We've seen a massive movement from manual to automation in the last couple of years, as manual could not handle this scale of change. Manual testing matrices are too big to approximate manually, take a long time, and are very complex to handle for applications like Uber, Snapchat, and Twitter that are scaling at the speed of light.

Manual testing might not be able to meet the demand of a plethora of web browsers, devices, operating systems, screen resolutions, and responsive designs. And to deliver quality at the speed of digital, there will be a need to bring in the right automated testing initiatives. But automation is vast and there are several nuances to it. Which nuances will be more pronounced in 2019?

Test Automation Strategy Day will help you get industry best practices in Test Automation and the latest tools and techniques to achieve it.

Conference Schedule

Test Automation Strategy Day, Melbourne

X Topic Abstract

Adoption of serverless technology is surely growing, with emerging product companies who built on top of it. Serverless is a new paradigm in which we need to neither administer nor scale the servers that run our code. The promise is that much less operations work is needed to deliver value to customers.
- Replicate conditions on your serverless cloud provider in the development and test environments. (AWS)
- Use a framework to manage code deployment (GitLab)
- Securely store cloud keys and other secrets (AWS Secret Manager, KMS)
- Automated testing remains a key part of the workflow. (Codeception)
- Embrace polyglot programming (Python, JS, Java etc…)
- Keep validation of the codebase (CI) separate from delivery (CD)

X Topic Abstract

In Today's Agile Delivery world- where it takes time to develop and deliver the GUI components of Software - its better to have early start of the testing cycle in APIs and micro-services.
It is better to test APIs via Automation Tool in iterative cycle before the UI gets developed. Feature Teams in Delivery model develop micro services apis which are exposed to the testing team - these apis can be tested via industry standard tools like Postman, Tosca, Open Source Tools like Rest Assured in order to give quick results that be interpreted before the UI component gets delivered for test.
Demonstration of the Rest Assured as well Tosca.

X Topic Abstract

Being sceptical about buzzwords like "Left-shift, "Automation-first", "Test-driven development", and having been through Agile Transformation journeys in the American, Indian and Australian contexts, I'm happy to report that there is a light at the end of this tunnel. I've witnessed the ultimate High Performing Team in action. Let's discuss a concise summary of what you can do to make sure your Automation Strategy produces results.

Speaker Profile

Core Developer turned SDET (Software Developer Engineer in Test). Visual C++ to Tosca. Currently mastering API Test Automation. If there are missing pieces in the Agile Automation journey, will design and code them in - Frameworks, Plugins, Metrics-collectors and Dashboards. Career spans a spectrum of domains - Market Research at Nielsen, Antivirus at Symantec, Postal Services at Capgemini and Finance with Toll. In a parallel universe, would pick User Experience Research for a career, but continue "automation" of the garden sprinklers.

X Topic Abstract

I plan to discuss the automation strategy I had used while creating the framework at Melbourne Water. Briefly that can be described as follows -

1. Identify the scope of automation. In MW the entire regression testing was done manually so there was a large scope to introduce automated regression testing to speed up the process and reduce head count.
2. Identify the right tools. MW used a 3rd party built Hybrid app having a web version as well. The web version could easily be tested using tools like Watir but the requirement stated that the real app needed to be tested. IOS simulators which are close to the real app were accepted as test devices. The tools under trial were KIF, Calabash and Appium.
Limited help and documentation available online didn't help with KIF & Calabash so Appium turned out to be the tool of choice.
3. Identify the devices required for testing - Since the apps are used by in house field staff the requirement was clear with the devices needed to run the test. ex- iPad Air2 and IOS 11.4 as organisation standard.
4. Regression testing started to catch more and more bugs with every release. It meant that the job was being done but regression issues were a concern. As a solution a Unit test framework was proposed and overtime it helped reduce bugs.
5. Dependency on a 3rd party created app generates issues- Automated front end testing largely revolves around page element identifiers, and with a dependency on a 3rd party this couldn't be consistent as we didn't have control over the source code. A suggestion was made to shift the development in-house so that we could better control the source code and page element definition. This approach has since helped reducing stress with automated tests failing.
6. Creating a Jenkins based CI-CD pipeline to trigger automated builds and running the Regression tests.

Kunal has over eleven years of IT experience spanning over phases of Agile Development and Automation Testing. Prior to Melbourne water he had worked at Simplot Australia and Swann Insurance in Melbourne. Kunal joined Melbourne Water 2.5 years ago as an Agile Tester with focus on automation. Melbourne Water were working on releasing their in-house mobile apps for their field users and the releases were constantly hampered due to code quality. Kunal worked on creating an Automated test suite with focus on Regression testing and laid emphasis on Continuous Testing which has helped improve code quality and relatively hiccup free releases. Currently Kunal manages the Mobile Automation testing at Melbourne Water and is a mentor to associate testers.
